Sweet.

As a child my family often made hard candy, especially it seems around
Christmas. At least that's the way I remember it... I think the first
time it was either a school project or Scout activity for my older brother.
After that we made it a lot. I would guess it's been 20 years since my mom
last made it though. And I've always thought it'd be fun to do with my
kids, now 7 and 10. So tonight we found ourselves with a free Sunday night
(that NEVER happens) and nothing to do. I decided to give it a try. I
used the recipe found here:
https://www.lorannoils.com/p-8752-stove-top-hard-candy.aspx

My family always used the sheet method and broke up the pieces randomly,
coated them with powdered sugar and stored to enjoy later. While I loved
the flavor of the candy, the sharp edges were always a bother. So tonight I
tried molds. Only I didn't read the mold info. well enough and used molds
that couldn't handle the heat of the hot candy, so the molds melted. Oops.
It still tastes yummy-even though they look a bit funny. The photo here
is the best of the bunch. Next time I'll have to try something else. Oh,
and next time I'll double the flavoring... I used rootbeer flavoring oil and
the candy is tasty but not as strong as my rootbeer lovers would like....

Merry.

The TREE is up.

A family record.  We have NEVER had it up before week 1 December.

Last Christmas in this house, stretching it out a bit...

Unplugged.

E is getting her jingle on….  She is amusing herself with a vintage toy piano, waiting patiently (or not) all day to decorate the tree.

Santa.

Santa’s in waiting…  All lined up and ready to go on the mantel….

I started this collection nearly 15 years ago.  I did a bit of editing last year, keeping only the ones I loved.   I find at least one new one each year, usually more.

Family.

You just do things for family (and those really special friends) that you otherwise just wouldnt' do.  My son announced this week that he just can't wait to put out his favorite Christmas decorations!  So of course I ask-"So, what is your favorite?"  And goes into this long round of "You know."  And I say "No, tell me."    " you know-OUTSIDE..."   and then me "no-what decoration outside?" while at the same time starting to get a tiny little sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach....  He finally spills that his absolutely favorite decoration is the set of blown plastic toy soldiers that I have always set on our porch.  Never before had he mentioned the soldiers....  I had NO idea.  I bought them at a yard sale for $1 and yes they were tacky but they were cheerful tacky.  I kind of like cheerful tacky.  The rub is that in our current frenzy to de-clutter before our out-of-state move the cheerful tacky soldiers were the one of the first items to get the axe and take the ride to the Goodwill store....   So guess where I'm off to on this chilly day??  Yep, off to the Goodwill store to attempt a buy back of my tacky little soldiers.  I know it's a long shot.  My back up plan is to buy the pair I saw on Ebay last night.  I sent the listing to my husband who informed me that they would never work because the set on Ebay looks to "nice".   So we decided that if we secure the Ebay toy soldier lights we'll have to beat them up in the back yard before said son sees them....   Or we'll have to spill the beans and tell him that yes, we gave away your favorite Christmas decoration....  sigh.

  • Having a fire just makes the whole house cozy...
  • I'm wearing silly socks with hearts all over just cuz' they are soft and fluffy and kept my toes warm on this very chilly day.
  • Even when I zone out and quit really listening, the sound of all those NPR reporters is comforting in the background.
  • Polka dots make me so happy.
  • Aren't waffles just the best?
  • Leno is better than the other guy.
  • Paper Snowflakes are in my near future...
