Outside my window...breezy leaves dancing on the trees

I am thinking...that no matter how busy or tired  I am I need to make plenty of time to say “yes” to my kids.  Yes to playing Battleship in the tree house.  Yes to “mom, can I read to you?”  Yes to “do you want to see my show?”

I am thankful for...my curious kids and their strange pursuits.  I just love that they are as happy or happier to have a new roll of duct tape as they would be to get a new game for their DS.

From the kitchen...an overly full fridge awaits.  We’ll be having lots of fresh fruit, some roasted veggies, and we’ll be making cookies for the 4^th very soon.

I am wearing...comfort.  faded jeans, a soft orchid t-shirt and my black and gray croc sandals. 

I am creating...cozy happy memories for my future and for theirs.

I am going...to have to hurry and work hard to pull off the VBS decorating in time with all these obstacles: lost tulle, missing wire, my own growing frustration and more…

I am reading...A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and wondering why I never found this book before.  On the other hand-it’s so perfect for my life RIGHT NOW. 

I am hoping...for so many things. 

I am hearing...the gorgeous songs of the neighborhood birds and the chatter of my family while getting their lunches-raiding the fridge for leftovers and such.

Around the house...gentle breezes flit at the curtains, evidence of our busy weekend is piled all over the family room, yet the dining room remains a haven of peace and calm.

One of my favorite things...is blog reading-sharing this crazy life, learning from others, broadening understanding and experience.  The richness, the inspiration, the discoveries…  it’s so so good!

A few plans for the rest of the week: science projects with the kids, getting a handle on the VBS project, visiting a much anticipated new baby boy, hitting a bucket of balls with local friends, and hopefully a bit of time lost in that book.

So my daughter went on an outing with a friend recently to a semi-local ice-cream factory…    She had lunch in the café and it was served in an empty “half-gallon” ice-cream carton.   She saved it of course because that’s what we do. (I remember constant arguments with my mother over the fine attributes of the spoons and banana split dishes at the DQ as a kid….  “But mom, it’ll make a canoe for my Barbie and I can play with it in the bathtub!!!”  Sometimes I won, most times I didn’t.  So I try to be lenient here… Though I now FULLY understand where my mother was coming from) Anywhoo…  My 8 yo girl after my own heart wouldn’t get rid of the ice-cream carton and had taken to carting it around as a hold-all for nature walks, trips to the store, etc.   So I grabbed 3 large sized brass fasteners, a bit of yellow binding tape and a rubberband and made her ice-cream box into a “purse”.  She loves it and has carried it to church and around town and gets lots of comments on it…    Ours was a clean, never used carton to start with but if you’ve got a sturdy carton just give it a good rinse and wash it out before hand.   And for the boys-just call it something else like “specimen box”.    You could of course decorate it and make it all cutesy but we opted for the plain old ice-cream box look.  Fun stuff!!

We visited a (semi) nearby skate park for the first time this weekend….   My 10 yo was a bit intimidated by the older rougher looking boys who were more experienced but he bravely got out there and gave it a go….  I even accidently cheered him on out loud (big mom no no!!) when he did his first successful ramp run without loosing his board.  I did refrain from any photos though….   He’s not into my “Momarazzi” moves at normal photo worthy events like the first day of school so I spared him the agony….   My 8 yo did laps on her scooter for a while before she came to me crying and begging to go home….   “Why?” you might ask??   In her words…. 

“Mom, those older boys are cussing and saying the

“PH”

 word, can we please go home now?”

So of course  I ask “what’s the “PH” word?”  and she explains…. 

“You know, the

“fffffff”

word.

Love this book.  About halfway through and finding it a wonderful little escape…   Wish I could play hooky tomorrow and hide in the tree house and read all day instead!
